Budo - Literally ” the way of the combat “, this term was adopted in the 20th Century to applied to Martial Arts in general, emphasizing its pacific aspects. In addition to the physical discipline and the different techniques, it implies an attitude of mind, spirit and of certain ethics. Budo emphasizes not only the physical development, but also the mental control and spiritual depth.
The concept of Budo has changed. Samurai might have seen it as Bujitsu - a way to improve their lethality - but in modern times we don’t have such external conflicts. Modern Budo as described by Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba is focused on internal conflicts and creating peace by bettering oneself.
Engineers often find themselves spending their days “putting out the fires” created by bugs, failures, overload or overwork. As such we sometimes focus narrowly on cursing our predecessors bad indenting habits instead of something more broad like how to make our design more scalable.
So take a step back, go for a walk, take a deep breath, or count to ten.
Leave the indenting alone. Spend your time solving a problem. Solving another problem is one step closer to being a better engineer.
